Cartoonist Notes - I Love This Cartoon
I have always loved the "skinny girl" cartoon. I sketched it in my notebook some time around 1990. It was from a time when people were first starting to realize how commercialized body image ideals of women were actually killing and mentally wounding women. Creating social norms that were not just abnormal but many times impossible for young women to emulate. I'm talking about airbrushing and models who were either naturally waif thin or unnaturally starving themselves. That is what the cartoon is poking fun at. An elephant could never look like the little skinny dolls, but the young woman elephant is enraptured by them and wants to buy one. Drawing obvious parallels to another doll that girls want in real life.
It might not be obvious as to what the cartoon is about. I have had people tell me that they don't get it. I often wonder is it my cartoon that is not obvious or is it because people are oblivious to the problem. It makes me sad when a woman says "I don't get it" about this cartoon.
