My First Comics - The Pilot Pen Drawings
This is an archive of my first comics drawn around February of 2014. The panels are tiny that I drew in - 4 1/4 x 3 1/4". I didn't really think that I could draw larger panels that would be automatically sized onto the computer screen. Really, larger panels sometimes look cleaner if you are looking at them with a large screen monitor. You can see that I was just getting the hang of using computer software to color and finding a good font to use for the punch lines. I am still struggling with the whole lettering bit and don't know if I will change fonts again or maybe hand letter the cartoons. My handwriting while legible, is not exactly nice to look at so I would have to find some lettering aid to help me make cartoony but legible lettering.
A few of the cartoon ideas are from 20 years ago when I was a kid sketching in a notebook, dreaming of maybe starting my own one panel cartoon. The slow turtle, the party dogs and the elephant looking at skinny dolls were all from my young brain. I have always loved the skinny girl cartoon. It was from a time when people were first starting to realize how commercialized body image ideals of women were actually killing and mentally wounding women. That is what the cartoon is poking fun at. An elephant could never look like the little skinny dolls, but the young woman elephant is enraptured by them and wants to buy one. Drawing obvious parallels to another doll that girls want in real life.
