Cartoonist Notes
So I don't think this is a funny cartoon. It can be interpreted several ways (and maybe a few I have not thought of). I wanted to generally point out how some people are so engrossed with their phone that they fail to see and experience the outside world around them. It might be funny that many people will look at this cartoon with their phone which might make an interesting visual. Like looking in a mirror with a mirror behind you -the double image. It is also interesting to me that I spend a lot of my time on my phone and computer also, yet thought to send this message. Life is full of contradictions it seems.
You could also see this cartoon through an environmental standpoint. Making cell phones can be devastating to the environment if the proper environmental controls are not in place. Look at China (among other places) where some cities are very polluted. We all want things but what is the price we pay for them? So now someone has a cell phone but the world around them is devastated. Wouldn't you rather look at a real tree, sit under its shade, enjoy the way the light spots through the moving leaves, watch a bird on its branches, see it change colors with the seasons? I would. Its good to remember that the digital life can be pretty interesting but you need to leave some time for real life also.
Sometimes I worry that people will forget about the natural world and discount it. That is the real world we need to live though! That is the way we have lived for millions of years - in harmony with our environment. Respecting what the earth gives us. If I sound like an environmental kook to you, you need to re-examine the way you live. To me, being in a wild place is like a religious experience. If you are unhappy or find something is not right in your life and can't figure out what it is, try going to a wild place and see if it doesn't help you. Whenever I am going through hard times, that is where I go to get whole again. Hike a mountain. Canoe down a river. Go somewhere without looking at your cell phone every two minutes.
