Cartoonist Notes
I thought I would just have a little fun with a couple of cat buddies I have created. I don't have names for them yet. Perhaps Grey and Orange can be their names right now. I was sketching a few different cat poses and had the classic cat with it's back arched, thought about incorporating the other cat maybe walking under the arch and though it seemed similar to a boat passing under a bridge.
So I usually just trace out a sketch in pencil and then ink over it. I then erase some of the pencil lines out because when I scan the cartoon as a BMP file and then put it into a computer art program, I can "trace" the lines using the art program. This allows me to remove the background of the scanned image. Normally, even though it not readily visible, the scanned image will have various small color differences in the blank portions of the image. When you try to color in those areas the colors don't cover the white areas evenly. That is why you take out the background.
I suppose I could hand color the backgrounds but I would have to experiment with that. I have never used watercolor and pencils and pens leave lines I don't like all that much.
