Cartoonist Notes
It sticks in the back of my head that I have seen this cartoon somewhere before but I wanted to draw it, so I did. Hopefully I didn't rip off someone's cartoon. It would be inadvertent if I did. That gets me thinking about the fact that common themes get rehashed in comics. I am also a big fan of comics in general so who knows what ideas come popping into my head that I may have seen when I was 12 years old, reading every Far Side cartoon ever made. I worry that I might inadvertently be reproducing someone else's comic but it's not like I am making piles of cash off drawing cartoons so whatevs. Quick fact that Gary Larson went to Washington State University in Pullman Washington where I also graduated by happenstance.
This makes me think of the relationship between humans and insects (OK, I know worms are technically not insects). It is often divisive. Did you know that there is something like a million insects for every human on earth. They are so important to our lives yet people abhor them. I can understand having myself been bitten and stung many times. I am a firm believer that there is a natural balance to our world that needs to be maintained. Hopefully we can use new technologies to meet our needs while letting the natural world get on with what it has to.
My bottom line is that I don't think people should go back to living in caves and making fire by rubbing sticks together but lets be reasonable. Whatever is poisoning and killing other life on our planet is going to eventually get us also. To me being environmentally minded is common sense. I don't want to drink poison water and cough up blood because someone to make an extra buck by doing whatever they want at the lowest cost. Everyone should understand the value of the things we take for granted.
I could preach about this for hours but it would probably be boring to read. So I will stop.
