Cartoonist Notes
Does a pig, some wheat and eggs make a hot dog and bun or did God make it? So did this comic make you think? That was my intention. Is the teacher hot dog right or the young student hot dog right? Could they both be right? Can science and religion exist together? I believe they already do but some people don't see it that way they only believe in one or the other. Some people would say this argument is skewed because people make hot dogs and this is not the same as divine creation. True, but I am using it to try and illustrate a point. What if God did create life but created it so that it would change and evolve? I find it hard for people to be anti-evolution and some people even outright anti-science. I think people should have a questioning perspective of life and the questions life poses. I think religion gets a bad rap from people who follow other people's interpretation of God's message blindly without questioning the person's motives. People do use religion to take advantage of other people. If you are a preacher or religious leader think carefully about what you do. I don't think God looks favorably on people who use religion for their own benefit.
Science uses a method of trial and error and reasoning to try and understand the world around us. It is not perfect which is why scientists constantly attack and think about alternatives to even mostly accepted law of our world. Does the Bible or any other text say that mosquitos carry Malaria? No. Someone had to figure that out. Life saving drugs and surgeries don't come from the Bible, they come from people working using reason to solve medical problems. Is this statement anti Christian? I don't think so.
There are probably some people that would want to kill me over the fact that I even raised this question and the fact that I have used non-kosher hot dogs in the cartoon as well. I think more than 99% of people would probably say that it is morally wrong to kill someone over a cartoon but that is just my perspective. Here is the saddest part of religious fundamentalism. It takes the spiritual journey out of religion. It removes the self discovery and self awareness that is the point and joy of practicing religion. There is only right and wrong, black and white. Every word of a religious text is taken as literal and there is no questioning or wondering about what it might mean to you. You are told what it means and that is that. Are you following what you think God is telling you or are you following someone telling you what they think God is saying?
