FRESNO HEAT
So hot
the grapes turned
raisin on the vine.
A mouse sat out
in the dawn
before daylight
alone
unafraid
to die in public.
The dried rose hips
piled by the wind
gather about
that panting life.
So slow to die
until the sun rose
unmerciful
to taketh away.
The old man falls
to sleep
without paying the electric bill.
The ozone
open to heaven.
