BEACH GIRL
Serenity swam slowly
away from the surface.
My toes dug deeper into the sand
and she laid her back
between my legs
and draped her arms over them.
When she looked upside down
up at me
she said
my eyes reminded her of home
when the mottled dark green grass
twisted together
under the spell of the wind
that blew off the cliffs
and out to sea.
And I almost cried
but instead just stared
at the moon reflecting from her eyes.
The wind tittered through the palm fronds.
The waves broke gently
and constant as a heartbeat
in the womb.
