Cartoonist Notes
I linked this cartoon to Reddit's comics page and titled it "Arctic" until someone sent me a message saying that there were no penguins in the Arctic. I promptly relabeled it as "Antarctic." I guess this comic is the cynical look at the statement - "If you can dream it, you can do it." After living a significant number of years I can tell you that most people are not going to be a superstar athlete for example. You have to be gifted with proper genetics, talent, the drive to work very hard and some luck. Some people have one of those traits but not many have all of them. That is why those people are rare. Luck because you need to have the right coach or not have your leg broken in an accidental accident or anything else life throws at you.
If I'm positive, I should say that dreams are absolutely obtainable. Now if you are a person, you won't make a good penguin but other dreams are possible. You need to put time and effort into what you do though. It seems to me that I have heard you need to spend 10,000 hours on something to become expert at it. That's around 5 years of 5 hour days worth of training. That is commitment.
I listened to someone tell a story about how they had become a professional soccer player growing up in the USA. The guy wasn't especially better than anyone when he was young. He would go out after practice and just kick the ball against walls and juggle the ball around for 2-3 hours every day. The extra time he put in started putting him a level above the other kids. He moved onto better teams, had better coaching and training to help him grow his game. Suddenly the time he had invested gave him the chance to be a pro athlete. There you go.
